History & Civilization
The human implantation in Isola dates back to pre-Roman times. According to sources, its name comes from the Ligurian leudola meaning “grassy slope”, but there is little to nothing known about the language spoken by this population.
In 1702, the villagers bought their rights, Isola becoming a free commune. Its population amounted to 1 080 people who derived their livelihood from livestock and chestnuts. Lastly, as part of the country of Nice, the small village joined with France in 1860.
